REPORT ON MALAYSIA RED CRESCENT SARAWAK CHAPTER

ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION 2009

I still remember the time when we strolled along the corridor along the school cooperative outlet where our school Red Crescent Youth Unit notice board is placed too. We were reluctant to enter the class so we took a glimpse at the recent event occurring in our unit and to my surprise I found out a flyer regarding an essay competition and a poster competition held by the Malaysia Red Crescent (MRC) Sarawak Chapter.

I focused my attention towards the flyers and skimmed through the details. To my delight, I realised that the theme given by the MRC Sarawak Chapter was “Global Warming”. Realising that the fact that it will be a good attempt to write this essay as it may aid to pull up my writing skills besides helping me to boost my co-curricular activities as it is a state level competition. The thought of winning never cross my mind throughout the competition.

Urged by the adrenaline gush, I decided to put lots of diligent effort for this essay although during that time I could remember that I have 5 more other essays waiting for me to attempt, ranging from school level to national level. Nevertheless, perhaps it was my instinct to ask me to attempt this one so I just give it a shot.

Making research and unearthing statistics are parts and parcel to produce a quality essay. I spend about several hours on the Internet, hunting down for useful information and flipping through reference books, hoping to scoop some information which may come in handy. Throughout the process, I have also gathered some information in the newspaper such as the statistic on the Influenza A H1N1 which I had included in my essay.

After spending over the weekend working out the essay, it was finally the editing part. I emailed my draft to my English Language teacher, Dr. Lau Bee Yian for the editing part. Kind-hearted and helpful Dr. Lau actually offered a helping hand to help me check through my essay and had asked me to alter any errors and mistakes. I was indeed over the moon when Dr. Lau could actually lend me a hand especially it was something that has nil to do with her. Hence, I would like to grab the opportunity to express my deepest gratitude towards Dr. Lau for her affectionate love, care and shelter! Thank you so much and I love you, Dr. Lau!

Our unit teacher-in-charge, Miss Connie Jong has submitted all our essays and posters to the organisers as early as in June. As time elapsed, most of us have forgotten about the essay, including me. One day during the Raya Aidilfitri Break, I was totally taken by astonishment when Miss Connie rang me up. She congratulated me that I have won one of the three prizes in the essay competition and informed me to attend the prize giving ceremony on the 26 September 2009 at the MRC Kuching Branch.

During the prize giving ceremony, I was indeed honoured and over the moon as I had the opportunity to take a picture for token of remembrance with the famous Dr. Chow Chi Ming, vice president of the MRC Kuching Branch. I never knew that this day would come – the day of taking pictures with our society’s famous leader! Charting the list, what is much happier than walking away the first prize by beating all other competitors throughout Sarawak valorously? During that very instance, I felt totally on cloud nine as first, I won the grand prize (it has been a while I was crowned the champion after Tan Yee, Eleen Wee, Esther Tan and I were crowned once during last year Courier World Exploration competition), took pictures with famous people and lastly but not the least, make a humongous contribution to our unit! Something that would definitely make all the teachers and members of our unit feel proud off! Heh people, RCYU #4 is now no longer just the best youth unit in Sarawak only, but has also produced members who won the champion in essay competition when beating with other units throughout Sarawak! Aint RCYU #4 great?

At the end of the day, I’d like to thank many people who have aided me in a way or another to help me venture through all these. A million of thanks is way not adequate for all those unfailing support. It is also part of my contribution to our unit – boosting our unit’s name in the state level before I left the school officially in months to come. Once again, thank you very much to my parents, the teacher-in-charge and all my fellow friends for their moral support, to Dr. Lau Bee Yian, the diligent and helpful English Language teacher of mine! Thank you everyone!

This prize is specially dedicated to everyone in RCYU #4, including ex-leaders of our unit and all Highians!

Highians can and so as our Youth Unit! All the best and keep up with all those fabulous performances and result! Remember, work as one and you’ll shine among the others!

Yours Sincerely,

LEON HA
